Title

Erie Canal in Tonawanda, Gateway Park in 1905, hi-res photo (LOC, 1905).jpg

Description

There is not much information on this photo at the Library of Congress's website, beyond the title. It appears to be facing east along the Erie Canal, with Sweeney Street (at present-day Gateway Park) on the left bank.* The near bridge is at Main and Sweeney, and the more distant bridge is at Oliver (about where the iconic counterweight train bridge is today). If you click the photo for the hi-res, you can see several teams of horses and carriages in the scene.

*On the left background boat, just above its lumber, you can make out the motto "Merry-Go Rounds." Merry-go-round makers Herschell-Spillman Company have a plant on Sweeney between Marion and Oliver at this time. Less certainly, at far left, just above and to the right of the "Day & Night" sign, a decorative peak seen in the distance looks like it could belong to the YMCA building on Main and Tremont.
